Intuitive Machines was founded in 2013 by Steve Altemus, Kam Ghaffarian and Tim Crain. It builds the Nova-C lunar landers and provides lunar communication services to NASA.
In February 2024, its Odysseus lander touched down near the lunar south pole: the first American landing on the Moon since 1972 and the first by a private company, though the lander tipped onto its side. Its next mission, IM-3, designated NASA’s Moon Base III, targets the Reiner Gamma lunar swirl.
